Stroke rehabilitation

Recovery after a stroke can be a long and complex road. Everyone’s story is different, but it’s never too early or too late to make progress.

Continuing physiotherapy after hospital will enhance and progress your recovery.

Your specific goals will determine the approach, but you can be assured that you will have access to the latest, evidence-based treatments. To compliment this, we can work together to ensure that your sessions include new and creative approaches so that you can actually enjoy your time as you recover.

Treatment approaches include:

  • Functional, task-specific training, such as walking, reaching, grasping, climbing stairs.

  • Upper limb rehabilitation.

  • Balance and falls prevention training.

  • Increasing energy and decreasing fatigue.

  • Reducing and managing spasticity.

Multiple Sclerosis

Every individual affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) experiences the progression and symptoms differently. Therefore, the approach to physiotherapy needs to be dynamic, adapting to meet the changing needs as they arise.

Regular exercise, assistive technology and medications all help in managing the symptoms, allowing you to keep your quality of life for as long as possible.

Physiotherapy, through exercise and prescription of appropriate assistive devices, can help to:

  • Improve your day-to-day functioning through strength and endurance exercise programs coupled with mobility and balance.

  • Manage fatigue through education and training on how to pace yourself and avoid the ‘boom/bust’ cycle.

  • Manage the effects of spasticity through strengthening exercises and specialised assistive technology.

Parkinson’s Disease

Exercise is the cornerstone of managing Parkinson’s Disease. It plays a vital role in the management of both the physical and mental health impacts.

The benefits include:

  • Strength and flexibility. Building strength and keeping the joints mobile, helps to reduce the risk of falls, while also improving posture.

  • Gait improvement. Walking is often the movement most affected for people with Parkinson’s. Improvements can be made with strategies that target walking in all different terrains and environments.

  • Balance. Falls are a common occurrence and can be dangerous. Reducing this risk though exercises and activities that are challenging performed in a safe environment, can reduce the amount of falls and possible injuries.

  • Exercise encourages neuroplasticity. The brain can change with exercise!

  • Slows disease progression. Exercise improves the neurovascular function and reduced oxidative stresses on the brain.

Exercise has so many benefits for people living with Parkinson’s. The right program can help deliver clearer thinking, better sleep, improved mood, social connectedness, and more.

Movement classes which integrate strength and endurance exercise for small groups (maximum of four participants) under the supervision of myself, are offered twice a week.

Classes are run on a 10-week cycle with a two-week break between each block. A 60-minute one-to-one session is required before attending the class to set goals and take appropriate baseline measurements. This is done to ensure that your improvements can be tracked. It is so important for you to see how far you’ve come!
